I often get asked why I chose Kali Holistic Healing as the name for my business. I chose the name after the Hindu goddess, Kali-Ma. Let's just say she is known to be one intense mama. She is often depicted holding skulls in her hands with corpses laying at her feet, and with decapitated heads hung in a necklace around her neck. Well the reason for this is because Kali was born as a warrior goddess who would go after demons and kill them. She was outraged by the evil and corruption the demons would cause and became murderous in attempts to control them.
A brief story from Temple Purohit, "For those who have grappled with their own ego, the personification of the demons in this story is striking. When the demons first glimpsed the Mother they charged. The darkness sees the light and does not comprehend it. The ego attacks that which it does not understand or that which threatens it.The demon with the magical power of sprouting a new demon each time a drop of its blood reaches the ground is reminiscent of spiritual pride. This is the power of the ego to inflate itself over “perceived” success in making spiritual progress. Thus spiritual progress is next to impossible as long as spiritual pride keeps sprouting a new demon each time the ego is slashed by some spiritual insight or experience. The ego whispers in our ear, “See what a great spiritual aspirant you are.”Other demons changed form when threatened by the Devi. The ego shifts its position with astounding cunning by the power of rationalization. Mahishasura, the demon king, was intoxicated with his strength and valor and changed into a buffalo. The ego is always consumed with self-importance. When he saw that he was not winning, he tried to fool the Mother with self-pity and claimed that her many forms were an unfair advantage. The Mother saw through the ploy and destroyed his self-pity with the Truth stating that there was only one Mother. The ego was destroyed and the soul found liberation in her quick and deadly spear of compassion. "
Kali represents creation, preservation and destruction and is also known as the Dark Mother. She is known for her wild outrages and bursts of energy which remind us of the womb and it's all its power. We not only birth children from our womb's but it is also where are second chakra resides, the Sacral chakra, the center where all creativity is birthed.
We can recognize the energy of Kali in lightning storms, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, the act of a pushing a child out of the womb, radical creative freedom, sudden changes in life that involve radical transformation, and sudden enlightenment experiences.
We can invoke Kali for transformative strength, burning limitations and karmic veils, purifying the inner body and chakras, awakening the kundalini (life force) energy within ourselves, letting go of outmoded structures or egoic tendencies, all forms of enlightenment, and purifying and strengthening our hearts.
I chose Kali because she represents the power of Shakti, the feminine life force we all have within us. I cannot think of a better goddess to represent the power all women have and the power that we have to heal ourselves. Namaste.
