An Ancient Science
YONI STEAM THERAPY
Yoni Steam Therapy also called a vaginal steam, v-steam, or she steam, is a healing treatment with indigenous roots in African, Korean and Mayan culture. Upon entering the studio, you will be welcomed into a private, quiet and meditative atmosphere to be invited to undress from the waist down and slip into a comfortable skirt/robe to keep the steam inside. After sitting comfortably on our beautiful Cherrywood throne as a gentle steam begins to permeate you. You will then be lead on a gentle meditative journey to clear your womb physically, emotionally and spiritually. A brief affirmation practice will be incorporated after the meditation. Afterward the meditation, you will spend the rest of the session relaxing and unwinding on your own.
Traditionally, this practice is done monthly and can help address issues such as:
- Detoxing the womb and body
- Addressing hormonal imbalance
- Decreasing or increasing blood flow during period
- Reducing pain, bloating and discomfort during monthly cycle
- Speed healing process after birth
- Treating fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterus weakness, endometriosis
- Healing hemorrhoids
- Treating chronic vaginal and yeast infections and other pH imbalance
- Relieving symptoms of menopause such as sweating and dryness
- Releasing trauma and emotions trapped in the womb
Can I receive this treatment while I'm on my period?
No, it's best to wait till it's over. During menstruation, the uterus is in its natural process of shedding and releasing. Adding the stimulation of a yoni steam may cause heavy bleeding and excess material to flow out. For this reason, it is best to yoni steam on the weeks in which the uterus is in its more restful state.
Who should not do a yoni steam?
Pregnant women, as the herbs could cause early contractions of the uterus and endanger the pregnancy. Women with IUD's (intrauterine devices) should also be cautioned about the yoni steam for the same reason. Women who have any type of internal infection (cervical, uterine or ovarian inflammation), or a fever, are encouraged not to steam until the symptoms have passed. Women also should not steam when open sores or blisters are present.
Why isn't it recommended for women who have an IUD to have a steam?
The medicinal properties of the herbs are intended to cause the uterus to contract and shed its lining. When an IUD is present, the risk is that this could cause the uterine tissue to shed or contract in such a way that it could dislodge, shift or expel the IUD. With that said, some women with IUDs have tried the yoni steam therapy and have reported great results, including reduced cramps during menstruation. However, Kali Holistic Healing does not advocate for steaming with an IUD, and doing so is at your own risk. You may want to talk to your local women's health care provider for his or her thoughts on this.
What should I expect after a steam?
Your menstrual cycle can and does change after doing a treatment. Often, there is a great deal of material that is "encrusted" to the inside of your womb, which is expelled after doing the yoni steam. The herbs have a powerful effect on the uterus, dislodging much of what is stuck. Sometimes this means your flow will be very heavy, dark and thick for just a day or two, and other times it just extends the length of your period to get it all out. Ultimately, your next periods will be much lighter and more comfortable than ever before. Other than feeling relaxed and pampered, you should not expect to see results immediately after the steam (there will be no visible discharge at the time). It can sometimes take more than one session to get the results that you want.
Does yoni steaming actually work?
There will always be those who doubt remedies that are not proven by modern science. However, yoni steaming is a remedy that has stood the test of time. For generations, women have shared their success stories among one another, and are only now beginning to share them with the world.
Some doctors don't recommend yoni steaming. Why would they say this?
You will find that Western medical doctors may be resistant to the idea of vaginal steaming. This is not because the treatment is dangerous or ineffective. This is an ancient remedy that is not taught in medical schools, and there are no scientific studies to "prove" it's effectiveness, and Western doctors often feel quite uncomfortable about it as a result. However, the women who utilize this treatment understand that millennia of women's wisdom and testimonials are just as valid, if not more valuable, than a scientific study in a lab.We recommend that you ask your doctor his or her reasons for the resistance to the treatment to better understand if the recommendation to not steam is specifically related to your unique body, or is a general statement about the practice itself. Most importantly, listen to your own intuition. If the thought of this treatment makes you feel excited or hopeful, then go for it!
Can I get burned from steaming?
No, we are extremely careful with the water temperature. Due to the nature of our Cherrywood throne, it does not ever exceed a temperature of 90 degrees. There is also space in our throne so that the steam can escape other directions other than upwards. This makes the possibility of the temperature being too hot far less likely.
How often should I yoni steam?
It depends on what you are working on. Some cases may require more maintenance than others. Typically, it's ideal to do this treatment monthly, weekly or every so often. We offer package deals for this reason.
How long after birth should I wait to get a yoni steam?
We recommend waiting until you are no longer bleeding before doing a yoni steam. Spotting, with dark colored blood, is okay. Obviously, in cases of extreme bleeding or hemorrhaging, a yoni steam would be contraindicated. There is not a point at which it is too late, as you will receive the benefits any time you decide to steam. Women who choose to do their first steam 4 or more months after giving birth often report getting their first cycle, even while still breastfeeding. It is also common to notice a pH difference after giving birth and yoni steams can help alleviate that.
How do yoni steams improve fertility?
There may be many reasons for fertility challenges, but one of those reasons is induration (build up of material) on the uterine wall. Yoni steaming helps to loosen that material and allow it to release through menstruation, making space for the fertilized egg to successfully attach itself. We recommend combining yoni steaming with abdominal massage therapy – the deep external massage on the uterus - for a dynamic approach that has brought many women success. It is recommended to steam at least once per week, when you are not menstruating, for three months before expecting to see results. Do not try to conceive during the 3 months of yoni steam, as the cleansing action may prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall. After the 3 months of yoni steaming and abdominal massage therapy, you may resume trying to conceive and hopefully have successful conception within one to three cycles.
